Building an

Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen,

Welcome to Seattle - the native home of The Boeing Company.  My name is Scott Tsao, and I am the leader of the Boeing XML Community of Practice, also known as XML@Large in Boeing.  I have had the privilege of nurturing this community of practice over the last three years, and am grateful for the opportunity to share our experience and introduce a topic that is at the intersection of two worlds that are both dear to my heart: XML and Knowledge – the Community of Practice for XML.

In my presentation, I will refer to XML as the combination of XML standards, technologies, vocabularies, applications, and the necessary education and training supporting the above.  In my mind, knowledge is a step near the top of the Data – Information – Knowledge – Wisdom continuum.  While “information” can be shared among people of common interests, for example in an Interest Group setting, “knowledge” can only be discovered and harvested via intensive dialog and close collaboration.  And this is the key differentiator between Interest Groups and Communities of Practice: the former facilitates “information sharing”, and the latter nourishes “knowledge discovery”.

In the next 30 minutes, I will share with you our experience in building our XML Community of Practice at Boeing.  It is like a whirlwind tour of our community.
